Ofsted have recently announced that they're updating how they report on education providers in England. Their redesigned report cards have been created with parents and carers in mind, to help you understand how providers are performing across key areas. Take a look a their video below to find out more or check out our FAQs.
What is the purpose of these new report cards?
The new report cards are designed to give parents and carers a clearer, more detailed understanding of how education providers are performing across key areas. These cards replace the previous single judgement.
What has changed in the grading system?
Ofsted will no longer use an overall single word judgement like "Good" or "Outstanding". Instead, the report cards will now provide colour coded grades for several areas:
- Safeguarding
- Inclusion
- Curriculum and teaching
- Achievement
- Behaviour, attitude and routines
- Children's welfare and well-being
- Leadership and governance
These areas reflect the varying aspects of a setting, rather than one overall outcome.
What are the new grade categories?
- Exceptional
- Strong standard
- Expected standard
- Needs attention
- Urgent improvement
Each category indicates how well a provider meets expectations in the specific area of inspection.
What does "Expected standard" mean?
An "Expected standard" grade means the provider is doing everything it should be doing to provide a good quality of education and care. This is shown on report cards with green coding, reflecting solid performance.
How is "Exceptional" different from the previous "Outstanding" grade?
‘Exceptional’ is not directly comparable to the previous ‘Outstanding’ judgement. It is awarded only to providers that rank among the very best nationally, setting an example for others and demonstrating excellence well above expected standards.
What should parents and carers do with this information?
Parents and carers can use these updated reports to compare different education providers. It will help you understand strenghs and areas for improvement, helping you make informed choices about where to send your children. The video above will help you interpret the report card details and grades.
Are the new grades comparable to the old system?
No, the new system cannot be directly compared the previous single word judgement. They are part of a new approach that focuses on a wider, more transparent evaluation of educational providers.
