How to have an eco-friendly Halloween!
At Little Pioneers, we believe that Halloween can be just as spooky whilst still being kind to the planet. We can show our little ones how to be resourceful by switching single-use plastics for more eco-friendly alternatives - without missing out on any of the fun!
Want some ideas on how to celebrate spooky season in a more sustainable way? We’ve got you!
Make costumes using things you have at home
Instead of buying single-use synthetic costumes, try making your own spooky outfit using materials you can find around the house! It’s a great way to get creative and repurpose things you no longer need. By crafting your own costumes together, you’re not only reducing waste but also teaching your little ones the value of creativity and upcycling.
Here are a few ideas:
-
Turn cardboard boxes into boats, unicorns, or even a spaceship! Get out your paints and pens to decorate your costume exactly how you want it to look.
-
Get creative and use shredded cardboard to fancy a beard or a mane of hair - or even stuff your shirt and trousers for a spooky scarecrow look!
-
An old favourite: use a bed sheet to make the perfect ghost costume - or cut into strips to wrap round your body for a monster mummy disguise!
-
Make use of your broken umbrella to make a cute bat costume! Cut sections of your black umbrella into wings. Remove the metal spokes, then simply attach securely by super glueing or sewing on to your little one’s sleeves!
Sustainable Halloween Activities
Try some of these easy, eco-friendly activities:
-
Paint pumpkins: Instead of carving them (which often leads to lots of waste), paint with fun designs that can last longer and still be eaten or composted afterwards.
-
Leaf art: Gather crunchy leaves from the garden or park, and transform them into spooky ghosts, bats, or autumn garlands with a bit of paint and creativity. This simple, sustainable activity brings kids closer to nature while keeping waste to a minimum.
-
Trick or treat using paper bags or old pillowcases: Instead of buying plastic bags, let them carry their treats in decorated paper bags or even old pillowcases. Both options are reusable and kinder to the planet!
By making a few eco-friendly changes, you can have an exciting Halloween that’s both fun and sustainable. These small adjustments show children just how easy it is to be creative and thoughtful about the environment – all while celebrating the spookiest time of year!
Together, we can make Halloween a celebration that’s not just good for us, but good for the planet too. Happy eco-friendly Halloween!
