Child Friendly Recipe - Toad in the Hole

We pretty much love everything about food - growing it, learning about it and more importantly eating it. We love using the freshest of seasonal ingredients that we can acquire and so at Little Pioneers we make sure our children are getting the best possible nutrition.

Here’s a recipe for a quick meal to make: Toad in the Hole. Your child will love helping you out and more importantly eating it!

Ingredients:

-         Plain Flour – 70g

-         Medium Free-Range Eggs – 2 each

-         Whole Milk – 180ml

-         Cumberland Pork Sausages – 5

-         Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil – 20ml

-         Green beans – 200ml

-         Gravy – 15g

-         Boiling water – 200ml

-         Potatoes – 400g

We have made a handy shopping list that you and your little ones can use to find the right ingredients! Download it here.

Ready, steady, cook!

  1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, make a well in the centre of the flour and crack in the eggs.

  2. Using a spoon, gradually beat the eggs into the flour and then slowly beat in the milk until the batter is the consistency of double cream.

  3. Strain and push any remaining lumps through a sieve, then cover and leave to stand for 30 minutes, or ideally 3-4 hours.

  4. Heat a large non-stick pan and cook the sausages over a medium heat until golden-brown all over.

  5. Then, place the vegetable oil into an ovenproof dish and heat in the oven for five minutes or until the oil is hot.

  6. Add the sausages to the hot dish and pour in the batter. Immediately return the dish to the oven and cook for 35-40 minutes until well-risen and golden-brown.

  7. Peel, dice then roast the potato.

  8. Serve with green beans and gravy.

For the vegetarian please use vegetable sausage
