Top 11 questions to ask at a nursery open day
Popping along to a nursery open day is a great way to help you find the perfect place for your little one. In a nutshell, you’ll get to have a nosy around, find out all about the activities we do, and how we can offer the best start in life. But not forgetting the team. They are the heart and soul of our nurseries and what they don’t know, isn’t worth knowing! So make the most of your visit by asking all the right questions.
To get you started, we’ve pulled together a handy list of the top questions to ask during your visit. Every nursery is different, so although we can fill you in on some things right now, the teams will be able to give you lots more info on their own nursery.
1. What are your opening hours?
So we know that drop off and pick up can be a military operation to fit in around you getting to and from work. Which is why most of our nurseries offer early starts and late finishes. They vary slightly between locations so ask on the day for your local nursery timings.
2. What activities do you provide?
We do loads! Eco-School, Boogie Mites, Intergenerational Play… to name just a few. Every day is packed full of engaging and educational activities to help your little one blossom. Make sure you find out more about these and other activities on your visit.
3. What feedback about my child’s day will I receive?
Of course you want to know what your child is getting up to each day! That’s why every parent has access to Famly which we use to send you photos and update you on your little one’s progress. The teams will tell you more about this on your visit, but it’ll definitely give you confidence that your little one’s being well cared for and having an amazing time.
4. How can I be involved in my child’s learning?
Parent Zone is your go to place to find out what your little one has been up to and how they’re getting on. But our teams are there any time to chat things through and to work together on learning and development. Find out more about this on your visit.
5. Do you take children into the local community or on outings?
Regular sessions at forest schools or trips to local nursing homes to spend time with the elderly residents is just an example. Schemes like these can have huge benefits on the children’s development so is something we encourage. Your local nursery can tell you much more about this, including the local communities we team up with.
6. What do your fees include?
Our fees are all inclusive so everything is provided. That’s nappies, wipes, creams etc. If you’re interested in which brands and types we use, ask at our open day.
7. Are all staff first aid trained?
Keeping every child safe and well is our top priority. That’s why every single member of the team is fully trained in paediatric first aid meaning they are confident to act when needed. In fact, we’re proud to say we’re 100% Millie’s Mark accredited.
8. What happens if my little one becomes poorly or has an accident at nursery?
Kids get poorly… quite a lot! After all, it’s a given with little ones around. Whenever this happens, we’ll be in touch with you to discuss what we can do or if we need you to come and pick them up. We have a full policy which our local nurseries can share with you on the day.
9. Can I look at the menu? Is it inclusive of all kinds of diets?
Healthy living and wellbeing is so important to us. We have autumn/winter and spring/summer menus which are packed full of both nutritious but very scrummy meals! And naturally we support any dietary requirements. Chat to the team on your visit to get the full lowdown and to discuss any needs your little one may have.
10. What is the procedure when someone else collects my child?
The safety of your little one is top of the list. We have very strict procedures in place around who has access to the nursery and who can pick up etc. Ask at our open day to find out how this all works.
11. When was your last OFSTED inspection, and what was the grading?
All of our OFSTED ratings are here for you to see on our website. But if you want to know more, or to discuss any specific points, just ask.
