At Little Pioneers, we understand the importance of healthy eating and physical activity for proper growth and development in childhood.
Research has shown that a balanced, nutritious diet has a positive impact on children’s ability to learn. Little Pioneers nurseries encourage our children to eat well and establish healthy eating patterns that will help set the foundations for their future health and wellbeing.
We teach our children to enjoy different foods, and our daily menus are made up of items from each of the four food groups:
• Bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods
• Fruit and vegetables
• Milk and dairy foods
• Meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein
You might notice that all our desserts are now based on fruit and yoghurt. New guidance from Public Health England states that high fat and sugar puddings should be limited to no more than one per week, so we have reviewed our menus accordingly. To make sure removing typical desserts, such as cake, does not impact the nutritional value of our menus, we are now including two child-sized portions of vegetables at lunchtime and one portion of vegetables with afternoon tea. So your child will still have lots of energy, and be healthier too!
As the weather changes, we update our menus to reflect new seasonal produce available from our local suppliers.
Our commitment to offer one free meat day a week
We're committed to offering one meat free meal a week in our nurseries. This means we're eating less meat and making the meat we do eat more sustainable. This is one small step to being more environmentally responsible and supports our journey for creating a better planet.

From Farm to Fork
We also teach our children about where their food comes from. We do this through a range of activities, including growing vegetables and visits to farms.
Eco-Schools
Our Eco-Schools work is just one part of our much wider Healthy Living and Wellbeing programme, which is developing the work we already do to ensure your children are as healthy and happy as possible.
